ATLAS US Tier-2 and Tier-3 workshop

Last week, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) played host to the latest ATLAS US Tier 2 and Tier 3 workshop. Running from November 28th to 30th, the workshop involved 55 participants from across the United States.

The goal of the workshop was to address deployment and operational issues for ATLAS Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 computing facilities in the US. We discussed what has been done so far in ATLAS computing, as well as our plans for the future.

Through these discussions, we were able to set milestones for us to achieve within the plan at Tier 1 and Tier 2 level. These included timelines for various software components, hardware upgrades, resources and capacities, and, of course, the Full Dress Rehearsal of ATLAS.

Institutes keen to set up Tier 3 facilities were also encouraged to attend the workshop, where we devoted time to helping them understand the Grid based ATLAS computing model and technique.

By teaming hands-on tutorials and demos with site reports, summary discussions and planning, the workshop provided an excellent opportunity for US ATLAS physicists and computer scientists to exchange ideas and information. Wei Yang
