Engin Arik

It was as a collaborator on the TRT subdetector that I met Engin Arik. She was the first Turkish physicist that I ever met and over the years she was great collaborator to work with. She and her students contributed to the computing effort in the TRT over the years. She also sponsored a wonderful TRT Workshop in Istanbul in May 2001 which I have many fond memories of including in particular a boat trip on the Bosphorus that served as part of the workshop excursion.

Recently I have been informed by our colleague Andrew Beddall that she was going to again be working intensely on the TRT software after an absence and I was greatly looking forward to once collaborating closely with her. The TRT software group was already working with her students (including Engin Abat who also perished in the same plane crash) to integrate the new effort.

My recollection of Engin is that she was a tireless worker and always in good spirits. I found her to be well engaged in the TRT software work herself and in supervising her students. At times, we sat close to each other in the building 40 open area and conversed with each other about the project and sometime just to pass the time of day. We often talked about the stresses of her schedule which at the time required her to frequently spend time in Vienna at the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The news of her sudden death was quite shocking. The TRT collaboration has lost a true friend and collaborator. She will surely be missed. However her untimely death will not prevent us from helping carry on her work by providing assistance the surviving members of her group in continuing their work in ATLAS.
