Vladimir Ammosov

Vladimir Visilevitch Ammosov, who played a major role in experimental physics at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino, passed away on 11th of January after long fight with an incurable illness.

He started his work in experimental physics in 1968 after studying physics at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technique. During his 42 years of scientific work, he published about 300 papers in various fields of high energy physics.

Vladimir’s early scientific interests were in the field of inclusive reactions studies with the MIRABELLE bubble chamber. Since 1974, he was the leader of a group who studied neutrino physics at the 70 GeV accelerator at Protvino and also in experiments E180 and E564 at FNAL.

For the last few years, he worked at CERN in the experiment HARP and ATLAS. He also proposed and led an experiment at the 70 GeV Protvino machine to study hard proton-nucleus reactions.

Vladimir was an enthusiastic and dynamic physicist who was gifted with keen intuition and diligence. With his departure, the physics community lost a first-class physicist and we all lost a wise and loyal friend.
