Next Spokesperson elected

14 July 2008

Fabiola Gianotti

Last Friday, July 11th, the ATLAS Collaboration Board had the difficult mission of choosing the future Spokesperson of ATLAS among the three excellent candidates that were retained by the search committee to go to election: Fabiola Gianotti, Marzio Nessi and Leonardo Rossi.

Only one could win though, and it was Fabiola, who came through in the vote held on the last day of the ATLAS Overview Week in Bern. Fabiola was elected on the first round of the votes at the Collaboration Board; out of the 161 represented Institutions in the Board, 81 gave Fabiola their support to lead the ATLAS experiment in the period that goes from March 2009 to February 2011.

“I feel very honoured to have been chosen Spokesperson for ATLAS in such an exciting period,” Fabiola says. “It is also a big responsibility and I will work together with all members of the ATLAS Collaboration to make ATLAS a success and a bright example in science.”

With the commissioning of the ATLAS detector well-advanced by the time Fabiola’s mandate will start, she will have to address new challenges. “We need an efficient well-working detector and also a powerful computing system. The latter is essential to allow all ATLAS collaborators around the world to receive data quickly and perform physics analysis efficiently,” she explains.

We wish the best of luck to Fabiola in leading the collaboration as ATLAS begins the period of discovery.
